07:37 pm - two weeks to go
It's funny that my last post was after my first week of school and now here I am with only two weeks left. I really cannot believe my first year is basically done. I say basically because in the next two weeks I still have to perform at Commencements and pack up two band/music rooms because we're moving rooms next fall.

Since my last post I've:

-Purchased a new car (2008 Saturn Aura)
-Marched in Dryden's Fall Festival Parade
-Changed my bedtime to around 8:30-9PM
-Moved out to Lake Orion with Ken (yeah!)
-Adopted two kittens (Donald and Daisy)
-Planned, prepped and performed a Christmas concert, Festival Performance and Spring Concert involving multiple ensembles for each performance
-Hit a deer on the way to work (two days before Festival)
-Eaten at Joe's Crab Shack for the first time
-Taken all of my band students to see the DSO
-Almost finished Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth book series
-Marched in Dryden's Memorial Day parade
-Been told I was going to be...no, maybe...no...yes...not laid off

Now we're just wrapping things up and getting ready for summer. My plans include sleeping, planning next school year, our annual Up North trip, a few family weddings and hopefully a couple band camps.

I hope life is treating everyone well!

08:10 pm - One week and one day down
The first week went pretty fantistically considering the last minute-ness of everything. The kids are great. It's just all the things that don't involve actually teaching a class that are frustrating right now. Things like:

setting up instrument rental night
my budget (or lack thereof)
figuring out purchase orders, milaege sheets, and log sheets for PD and mentoring
how to or not to make long distance calls
finding books, music and equipment in various and random parts of my rooms

I am however, really enjoying the variety of ages I'm getting to work with. It's neat seeing kids in all stages of development. No matter what, I'm learning a lot, and every day is an adventure which is part of why I wanted to be a teacher in the first place.

09:13 pm - first day of school
I had my first day today but sans-students. I spent 9 hours in my high school band room...and didn't accomplish anything. I spent the whole day on the phone or meeting with people. My room is a mess and nothing is catalogued or organized in any way, shape, or form. I don't like starting off so unorganized, but I'll eventually get things where I want them.

I'm beyond grateful to have a job. I just wish that I'd have had more than two days to prep two rooms.

Small steps. This week first. Then the month. After that we'll go from there.

11:40 am - An update on the life of me...
Sinve my last post in February I've:

Conducted at MSBOA festival and a spring concert
Graduated from Wayne State
Subbed in East Detroit
Applied for countless jobs and interviewed for a few
Gone Up North with the family, including Ken which was nice
Gone to a band camp that was not East Detroit's.

Posting this is my way of stalling before packing for another camp.

Sadly still no luck on the full time job front. I'm trying my best to remain optimistic. Even if I don't get something soon, I'm still registered to sub in two districts so that should keep me busy and making at least a little money. Where ever I end up and how I get there is what's meant to be at this point in my life.

Ken will be out of the Marines at the end of the year! That's exciting and terrifying all by itself.

That's about it in the life of me so far. Here's hoping my next post will bring happier news.

09:57 am - i can't think of anything creative
I love winter break. I had Friday off and I don't go back to school till Thursday. It's awesome having some time off to get a few things done. I'm practicing the sax and bassoon the next few days to prep for my woodwind cred. by exam test. I'm also planning on getting some work done on my teaching portfolio.

The only not so great thing about this time off is that band festival is a week from Friday. Once we go back, we'll have seven class days to finish preparing. It's a little frightening. Some of the pieces are going really really well...others have me worried. I just wish some of the kids were as worried, maybe they'd look over a few parts on their own.

There's really not much else going on besides work. I lead an exciting life don't I?

I hope life is good for everyone else out there.

04:55 pm - killing time at work
so i'm sitting at JLS, bored out of my mind. i can't even do inventory because that would leave the front counter un-attended. so while i'm doing all of nothing, i thought i'd update for those of you that might actually still use lj.

i'm done with my pre-student teaching. and all my classes ended up really well. only half a grade higher in one class and i would have made dean's list. I got a 3.71 and needed a 3.75. that would have been my first time making it. I'm still pretty happy with that GPA though, considering i made it while doing pre-student teaching and working.

i'm really looking forward to student teaching and...drumroll please...graduating in May!!!! the only kink in the works for next semester is a four hour class from 6-10 on Thursday nights. it'll be a pain dragging myself there after student teaching all day out at L'anse Cruese North, but it'll finish my minor. i've also got to re-do my first aid/cpr qualifications at some point as well.

i'm nervous about the whole getting of a job thing, but i'm going to try my best to just focus on graduating first. I really can't get a job without the degree.

Ken just left a few days ago. I forgot how short 10 days is. While we don't see each other often, it's usually for more than 10 days. That didn't work out this time, but he's almost done! Even if he's deployed next year, he'll be out in April/May of 2009. That's just over a year away. After waiting four years, that should be manageable.

so that's an update on the life of me. I hope everybody had a wonderful Christmas and that you all have a Happy New Year!

08:55 am - an update on the life of me
Things have been pretty busy lately. As soon as I complete one task, it seems that three more pop up in its place. And those three new tasks all appear to have the same due date.

Pre-student teaching is going fantastically. I can't wait for MEAPs to be over though so I get to do some more teaching again. It's hard to get much done in the 36 min classes on MEAP days. The kids are great though, and they're starting to really warm up to me. They actually ask me questions instead of waiting to ask Liz. They actually smile when I crack a lame joke. I even had a discussion yesterday with a few girls about our favorite chap-sticks. Odd, I know, but it still made me smile.

I only wish I didn't have classes that interfered with my time at the school. I'm finding myself caring about them less and less. Especially my GEO1010 class that I took for my science credit. I'm so ready to be done and just teach. The other classes are just taking time out of that.

In about a month, I'm hopefully going to NC to see Ken for the USMC Birthday Ball. It'll only be for a few days, but it'll be nice. All we need to do is reserve a room, get a plane ticket, figure out his work schedule...and I kind of need a dress. But we'll manage. I just hope it works out. This will more than likely be our last Ball together. Next year I'll hopefully be teaching full time. I can't wait to see him.

Less than six months left till graduation! I hope all is well with anybody out there that actually reads this.

10:10 pm - and for her next trick...
guess what idiot's taking 14 credits on top of her practicum?

that's right! Amy!!!

it's going to be an extremely interesting eight months. i'm also going to have to take a political science class while student teaching so that i can finish my minor.

and somewhere in there i need to work a little so i can pay for things like...gas money, food, parking fees, books...and oh yeah, tuition.

i'm looking forward to getting started though, because that means i'm that much closer to being done. :)

10:11 pm - for anyone out there that cares
life has been ridiculously busy lately. but it's been a good busy. Ken and I got to spend almost an entire month together. I was down there almost two weeks and then he was up here for almost two. We visited lots of family and spent time with friends. And of course we spent as much time as possible with each other.

i got back from my ninth consecutive band camp on friday. it was a good time. what's terrifying is that i could potentially be doing that with my own band next year. i highly highly doubt i'd walk into a high school gig straight out of college though. it's scary but very exciting.

WSU seems to be trying their hardest to fuck with my life. i'm trying to stay optimistic, but it's getting harder. nine months (God willing) and i'll be out of there.

almost time for school to start. which means a whole bunch of extra craziness. i've managed to get myself into a 17 credit semester while doing my practicum. on the plus side, Ken will hopefully be coming home in a couple months, so that will give me a short reprieve from losing my mind.

i guess that's all for now. i hope everybody's summer is going well!

04:02 pm - killing some time
so every day that we've been here, the maids have come around by 8:30 in the morning and are off our floor by like noon. except today. it's 4:00 and they just started our room. we've been gone for hours and they just started it. so now we're downstairs in the lobby waiting.

it's 90 million degrees here, but that's ok. because i'm on vacation. with Ken. and there's a pool. and we're really close to multiple beaches. which is where we're hopefully going tomorrow.

it's been an interesting, but awesome time so far. i still can't drink with Marines. or their wives for that matter. i'd need to do months of intensive endurance training for that. time has been flying. i can't believe i've been down here a week already. once you get outside of Havelock, there's actually quite a bit of stuff down here. lots of cool little shops on waterfronts and whatnot. i got a pretty pair of antique amethyst earrings.

i've been informed that the room's just about ready, so i'm outta here. hope all's well at home. adios!

10:11 am - Procrastinators unite...tomorrow...
so i should be packing right now. and doing laundry. and possibly taking a shower. or getting a new battery put in my watch. but i'm not. i'm dicking around on the computer. productive right?

49 hours and a few minutes till i see Ken. in case anybody was wondering, or even gives a crap, i'm pretty damn excited. 12 days down there and then he'll be here for about 12 more. put together that's almost a month which is pretty amazing. and i know time is going to do that funny thing again. the one where it does the opposite of what you want. the closer we get, the longer the hours seem. but as soon as i get that wonderful first hug, it'll fly.

almost there...

I have a feeling you're not going to like this much. Do I care? No. How do I know? It's because you hate criticism. You love to be loved and you'll do anything to be accepted.

Unfortunately for you, I can see right through your insincere compliments and over-the-top greetings. No matter what you do, I'll always hate you for what you are. An arrogant, unstable, overly enthusiastic scumbag.

I bet you're pretty proud of your accomplishments, huh? You seem to achieve at whatever you put your little mind too. Trust me. Nobody likes the person who is good at everything. NOBODY LIKES YOU.

This might also have something to do with the fact that you're a cheating machine. You're just not the type of person to make long-term commitments. You enjoy seeing "what could be", rather than being satisfied with "what is." This, of course, means you often leave others in the dust while you seek out another lover.

Well, at least you're not the one left in the dust.

Unfortunately, when you're the one lying in the gutter with a bloody knife in your back, you might think differently.

04:31 pm - it's been a while
maybe i should update, though very few people seem to use lj anymore. i'm off for the summer. school's out, so no more subbing for me unless i get called in to work summer school. ewwww. after working this weekend i'll be off for a while because i'll be in NC!!!!!!!!!!!! one week to go and i get another first hug. words cannot describe how great a feeling that is.

after i get back from that trip, summer's pretty much done. we're going up north with the Almond family a few days after i get back from north carolina. then we'll have a few days and home band camp starts. ken will leave at the end of that and then it's off to away camp. then a week or two-ish off, complete with marching rehearsals and stuff, and then it's off to Maine for a while. and then it's back to school. my last year of school. thank God. i'm sooooo very tired of WSU bull shit.

that's my quickie update. i hope everyone's summers are going well.

09:17 pm - keeping busy
school's out for summer, but i'm not lacking in stuff to do. I've been subbing for a couple weeks now. I've gotten to work with Kelly's bands twice and i worked at the high school subbing for band yesterday. it's gone pretty well so far.

I took today off to take care of my college of ed application. it's all done and turned in as of this afternoon. now to see how many times they decide to lose paperwork. i hope it all goes through. i even brought back my overdue library books.

actually started practicing again. i'm working on my audition piece for the Suzuki program. i've got a lesson scheduled for next week to get a last opinion on it before i tape myself and send it in. there's a summer institute in philidelphia in august that i'm hoping to get into, but i'm not sure if i'll get the tape in on time. we'll see i guess.

tomorrow i'm starting back at a gym. i stopped in and signed up today. i'm excited to start getting into some kind of shape. and i think that's about it for the life of Amy right now. less than two months till Ken's deployment is over. :)

08:00 pm - sigh
it's been a while. i feel like i should put something in here, though there's not much to tell aside from homework, homework and more homework. i'm actually working on my term paper for mid east politics right now and i'm a little stuck. i've got about half of it, but i don't know how to organize it now or what exactly to use. and i've got all these books that take forever to get through for one or two facts. i'm getting very frustrated and very tired. and now my tummy is deciding to be stupid, there's a possibility that's from stress but i'm just guessing there.

april's almost over, which could theoretically mean that i'll be seeing Ken in just over two months. theoretically. that's something to look forward to. i'd settle for an email right now though.

in the mean time, i need to get through the end of this semester and not fail AnTech.

wish me luck. good luck to everybody with their finals.

10:10 pm - could you make it strong, 'cause i don't want to think
the semester's almost over. that's terrifying and thrilling all at the same time. terrifying because in the next several weeks i need to:

start and basically finish a 10 page research paper for mid-east politics
analyze Chester Overture for Band phrase by phrase
write a unit plan for methods
...and a "bibliography assignment" which was actually due today and i didn't realize but i can't find any articles in interested in online
...and maybe my budget
do a video audition for the Suzuki teacher training program
finish my college of ed. application stuff up
get something started with our prospectives for Delta Omicron
do my credit by exam for woodwinds
and something else important that i know i'm forgetting

plus teach lessons and tiny tunes and clean my mom's house and work at JLS and go to my other classes. yippee.

but i'm so excited to be so close. ken's been gone three months already, which means we're halfway done with this deployment. and a year from now i'll be getting ready to graduate. so short term, i'm doubting my ability to maintain my sanity, but long term, things are looking good.

09:09 pm - why eat the cookie when you can eat the future?
yesterday was almost the best day ever. started off the day going to breakfast with Katie and Diana. then we went to Borders and i got several new CD's with my Christmas gift cards. after that we went to the spa. i got an hour long massage and a pedicure. it was heavenly. and then, what better to do after a new pedicure than to get shoes to show it off? so we hit up DSW and i used my Christmas gift card there.

came home and sat on the patio in the sun with dad and sarah while drinking a beer. then i taught 3 flute lessons, which i always enjoy. and katie came over after work and we drank disaronno while watching buffy reruns. good times with good friends.

today wasn't quite as stellar, but i wasn't in school, so it's alright. Ken is in another picture on the Bataan site. i was happy to see him, but then incredibly sad. i miss him. and then the radio mocked me and played all sorts of sappy songs that made me miss him more. we've made it this far. i'll survive.

i get to sleep in again tomorrow. so i think i'll go be a girl and paint my nails because i can stay up late enough to let them dry. :)

09:49 pm - grrr...
this spring break is not starting off to be as relaxing as i'd hoped. i've gotta figure out in the next 10 hours whether or not i want to go to a suzuki seminar next saturday from 9AM-4PM. it's the first thing required in order to become a certified suzuki teacher, which i'm extremely interested in doing. i have no idea when it'll be offered again, but i hate cancelling piano class and ditching out at JLS again. plus i've got to drop a chunk of money on it, and i will know absolutely nobody there, unless someone else from wayne is going.

in other news, i need another one of me to take care of fraternity stuff. or at least another me to coordinate the schedules of several people. i wish i didn't suck at life sometimes. it'd make life a lot easier.

boot camp communication was better. at least i knew when i'd be getting a letter. it was also cheaper.

1 1/2 months.
4 months.
1 year, 10 months.
